Akemi Kinukawa


Akemi Kinukawa is a professional Lindy Hop/Swing Dancing instructor and performer who is committed to and passionate about sharing the joy of partner dancing with a diverse group of students. As a teaching artist of Dancing Classrooms a.k.a. “Mad Hot Ballroom” program, she currently teaches various partner dancing to 4th, 5th and 8th graders in NYC public schools.  

Her speciality, Lindy Hop, is the very original form of swing dancing developed in Harlem in late 20s to early 30s to the sound of big band music.  She has studied the dance with many internationally renowned Lindy Hop instructors including Frankie Manning.

She has taught Lindy Hop at various programs including after school programs, dance schools for youth, high schools, universities, senior citizens’ programs, ESL groups, and major dance studios including You Should Be Dancing Studios, Sandra Cameron Dance Center, Brooklyn Swings and Swing Dance Astoria. She has performed and choreographed routines that incorporated traditional Lindy Hop movements, Charleston and air steps for various events, including the Midsummer Night Swing at Lincoln Center and Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Rutland Adult Day Care Center (2011) She taught swing dancing and other types of partner dancing to Chinese and Russian elders at Rutland Adult Day Care Center in Brooklyn, NY.


Recent Teaching Experience with Children & Youth:

Dancing Classrooms (2011 to present) Currently teaches various ballroom dancing to 4th to 8th  grade students at public schools as a teaching artist of Dancing Classrooms.  

Y Dance Academy, Tarrytown, NY (Fall 2015) Taught Lindy Hop to teens.  Choreographed and taught a routine for the Y Dance Academy Festival.   

Frankie100 Youth Program (Summer 2014) Organized, planned and implemented Youth Program for Frankie100, the world-wide celebration of the legendary Lindy Hop dancer, Frankie Manning.  Choreographed and taught a routine for young dancers to be presented at one of the Frankie100 events.  


High School Residency (2009 to 2011)  Taught Lindy Hop at Baruch College Campus High School and Greenwich Academy Upper School Dance Program (CT).

College and University Residency (2015) Taught Lindy Hop at Columbia University and NYU Swing Club.
